In the past we would make drawings in our chart to describe the view of the optic nerve. This was improved by taking pictures to record the appearance but this still requires a very subjective comparison of the current appearance and the old pictures. The RTA allows us to precisely measure these thick nesses with much greater accuracy.

The RTA uses a light reflection of the retina and optic nerve to measure thickness. This is critical in the care of glaucoma, diabetes and macular degeneration. This allows us to have a permanent record of 3 dimensional shape of your eye. 

In glaucoma, the optic nerve and the retinal fiber layer slowly die off. In the earliest stages it is difficult to detect these changes. At first, there may be no loss of vision. Diagnosis requires accurate measurements that were previous not possible. It is very important to diagnose and treat this condition as early as possible.

In diabetes, the blood vessels in the retina can weaken and leak fluid. The RTA allows us to measure the thickness of the retina and monitor this threat at its earliest stages. As in glaucoma it is critical to diagnose and treat this condition as early as possible.

In macular degeneration, the blood vessels can grow under the retina and cause swelling and severe vision loss. The RTA allows us to look at the retina and its thickness in an entirely new way.

Visagraph Evaluation

Eye movement recording with the Visagraph evaluates the "process" of reading or how an individual undertakes reading in terms of eye movements. Visagraph recordings are much like a "time and motion" study to determine a subject's level of reading efficiency in relation to national norms (over 12,000 subjects.)

This reading efficiency measurement combined with standardized reading procedures, which measure reading efficiency, can provide a more complete evaluation of an individual's reading competence.

Recording Functions

A student or trainee slips on goggles and they are adjusted to his/her inter-pupillary distance. The Visagraph requires no calibration or adjustment and "easy to read" reading selections in the test booklet are then read silently.

During the reading/recording, the Visagraph samples eye movement positions 60 times per second and automatically computes various reading performance measures. Following this reading, a comprehension check determines whether the subject read with reasonable comprehension that suggests a usual reading.

Many people are familiar with eye pressure testing for glaucoma. What most people don't realize is that without testing the neurology of your eye, no examination can truly rule out glaucoma. To ensure that we diagnose glaucoma early and accurately we recommend an FDT test. This innovative technology can diagnose glaucoma even when your eye appearance and pressure are normal. The Humphrey FDT with patented WelchAllyn Frequency Doubling Technology isolates a subset of retinal ganglion cell mechanisms in the magnocellular (M-cell) pathway. These M-cells have large diameter fibers and comprise only 3% to 5% of all retinal ganglion cells. The damage of these cells in the disease process makes FDT efficient and effective for the detection of visual field loss.
